Modern occlusal sealants can close the natural pits and fissures of healthy teeth and render the chewing surfaces impermeable to decay.
The interproximal tooth surfaces, however, still require the daily hygiene attention of dental floss. This 16 years old boy almost lost this second molar due to neglect. He thought the sealants made his teeth "bullet proof" and no longer in need of any attention.
There are many reasons to remove "wisdom teeth" before they cause trouble (crowding, decay, position, hygiene access, cysts, etc). Perhaps the most unfortunate condition is when a mal-positioned "wisdom tooth" damages the adjacent tooth and both teeth are ultimately lost! it is prudent to have "wisdom teeth" evaluated by your dentist and make the decision to either remove or retain these teeth before trouble begins!
Placing orthodontic appliances on the teeth of young patients not only magnifies the need for effective oral hygiene, but also increases the difficulty to meet those hygiene requirements.
Inadequate oral hygiene during periods of orthodontic treatment can cause disastrous results which are difficult and costly to restore.
